Updated 5 July 2023  - new Google Maps links for return route added - substituting Illalong Rd for both Berremangra Rd (multiple sections of badly damaged road surface on crests and corners) and Bouyeo Rd (similar to Berremangra Rd with several unsealed (roadwork) clay surface sections adorned with marble sized pebbles).

If you’re not one to shy away from winter riding, then why not join the Club for a Sunday back roads ride to Wombat for lunch at the Wombat Hotel (335 km return)? If you’d prefer a shorter ride, then why not join the first leg of the ride through to Binalong for coffee (170 km return)?

Outbound to Binalong (coffee/rest stop) and then Hughstonia, Cunningar, Cusak and Moppity Rds to Young, then onto Wombat via the Olympic Hwy (165 km).

Return via Harden-Murrumburrah, Jugiong Rd, Illalong Rd onto Burley Griffin Way and then home (170 km).

Approximately 335 km on sealed main, secondary and back roads. Expect some road surfaces to be damaged. Be aware that the return route includes back roads that are  narrow, hilly and twisty, with one including a cattle grid. 

Fuel: Available in Young and Harden-Murrumburrah.

Meeting Point: Meet fuelled and ready to go at the Ampol/Caltex Foodary, Gold Creek (Nicholls) for a prompt 09:15 departure.

GS Riders: For those keen on detouring via gravel or dirt, you’re more than welcome to join us en route, or at the Pub. On the return route, McMahons Reef Rd (as an alternative to Illalong Rd) offers a few kms of dirt mid-way along it:

For those joining the ride along the way, or making their own way to the Pub, proposed meeting points (with best guess times) are:

• Ampol/Caltex Foodary, Gold Creek (Nicholls) - leaving 09:15;
• Café on Queen, Queen St, Binalong - coffee stop – arriving 10:15, leaving by 10:55; and
• Wombat Hotel - arriving 12:05 (lunch booking @12:15).

If needed, return route thawing out options include:

• Barney’s at Bookham (3pm close)
• Rollonin Cafe, Bowning (4pm close)
• Hume Hwy Services, Yass
